"Why did we stop playing baseball?" The Sappy Moffitt League harkens back to the days when #SouthBend factories fielded skilled industrial league baseball teams that drew large crowds. By Nicholas Mainieri ’06: magazine.nd.edu/stories/extra-… nicholas mainieri Elmer Sappy Moffitt Foundry Field
Was honored to join Sean Stires’s Irish Breakdown podcast today to talk about my recent Notre Dame Magazine story, the Elmer Sappy Moffitt league and Foundry Field project. Lots of inside baseball talk here too, literally, thinking about old times w Sean! youtu.be/6BoLDfrNRcE via YouTube
The Foundry Field project, subject of my recent story in Notre Dame Magazine, will have its groundbreaking celebration on May 12. Looks to be a neat event—please take note if you’re a South Bend community member or are around that afternoon!
Come celebrate the groundbreaking of Foundry Field, a quality public-access baseball field in South Bend’s urban core, celebrating the baseball stories of our city’s marginalized communities. Free food, games, and prizes! foundryfield.org @IHCDA Elmer Sappy Moffitt

I got to spend my entire day out in the community sharing baseball with colleagues, students & neighbors… To quote nicholas mainieri, “What could be more worthwhile than building a garden with your neighbors in the middle of the place that you share?”
Many many thanks to South Bend Tribune’s Kathy Borlick for this wonderful column on Foundry Field. southbendtribune.com/story/entertai…
I wrote a little follow up on on the recent Foundry Field groundbreaking celebration for Notre Dame Magazine. Would be happy if you’d read and learn more. This is Detour, who did the Foundry Field mural. He’s done a lot of cool things—check him out.

Year 20 of adult baseball. 5th year in the Elmer Sappy Moffitt league. I’m almost eligible for the pension. Got nipped by the Buffalo today 9-6 but a good time was had by all. 1-4 on the day with 2 rbi and a run scored.
