On the Goree Island the Door of No Return memorialises the final exit point of the enslaved from Africa. 20,000,000 Africans departed through that door and 6,000,000 died on the Island. A crime against humanity was committed there by the Dutch, Portuguese, British and French.

My 6th grade students from Oneida MS, Schenectady NY used the Gholdy Muhammad “Who Are You” exercise. A great identity exercise. They already feel a sense of belonging

Teaching Identify sends a message to your students that you see them & their identities matter. “Identity was one of the first things to be stripped from enslaved Africans, thus it became key for people of color to know themselves so they could tell their own stories.” Gholdy Muhammad
