Ian Edard Kroe (57) was denied probation & sentenced to prison for 394 yrs to life. After arrest by Belmont Police Dept., he was convicted of 33 felonies for the repeated rape, torture & imprisonment of an elderly woman, who stated at sentencing she, "survived beyond all odds."

Erick Estrada Cardenas (37) pled no contest to drug possession, arson, and admitted to a prior felony strike. At the time of his arrest by SMC Probation Deputies, he was on parole with an active warrant, and had 11 prior felony convictions. He will be sentenced Aug 4.

Mohammad Badar Naveed (40) denied probation & sentenced to 2 yrs state prison for molestation of a 14 yr old female, something the victim hesitated to disclose because her family was financially dependent on Naveed.

Markeysia Na Shay Wright (35) found guilty of battery by a jury after a short deliberation. Aug of '22, a drunken Wright tried to board a flight at SFO without ID or boarding pass, then trespassed onto the jet bridge, shoving the attendant who tried to stop her twice in the face.

Following a tip, Eric Nguyen (32) was stopped at SFO returning from Korea & found to possess images of children 8 to 14 yrs old engaged in sexual acts. He has pled no contest to the act and will await sentencing on Aug 4, 2025.

One of our talented Deputy DA's was recognized today for 10 yrs of dedicated service to this office and the San Mateo County Community with Mr. Wagstaffe and his administrative staff on hand to celebrate his achievement. Congrats!!

Christopher Scott (48) pled no contest to robbery with a prior strike, sentenced to 6 yrs in prison. Sept '23, Scott shoved a BART passenger & stole his luggage, shoving him again when the victim tried to get it back. BART police tracked him down wearing the victim's headphones.

Dec '22, Michael Anthony Calkins (36) violently assaulted his pregnant girlfriend, causing a spinal fracture, broken ribs, & concussion. Yesterday, a jury convicted him of 7 counts, including felony ADW & domestic violence. Sentencing Jun 6, he remains in custody with no bail.

The judge denied Beltran probation and sentenced him to 14 years in prison following an impact statement made in court by one of the victims. Beltran was also made a lifetime sex registrant and ordered to have no contact with either victim.

Mario Aguilar Espinoza (53) found guilty of felony vandalism & misdemeanor battery. In Oct '24, Espinoza shattered a glass bus shelter in front of witnesses, was then denied boarding the bus, then broke a window on the bus with a rock, and spat on responding Menlo Park PD.

Brandon Shawn Salinas (42) was arrested in March by San Mateo County Sheriff's Office for possession of drug paraphernalia & carrying a concealed 24-inch machete. He was found guilty by a jury of both charges after 30 minutes of deliberations. He remains in custody, with another felony trial to come.

Richard Smith (38) identified at sentencing by the judge as, "every parent's worst nightmare," was sentenced to 52 months in prison for luring who he thought was a 14 yr old girl to a park for sex, where he was arrested by San Mateo Police Department. Unfortunately for him, "Maggie" was a decoy.

Marcelo Enrique Pallais (46) pled no contest to felony possession of methamphetamine, sentenced to 2 yrs probation, 1 year county jail. San Mateo County Sheriff's Office deputies witnessed the purchase at a train station in April. He has 6 prior convictions for possession, 2 in the past 2 years.

In '95, Luciano Ramirez, then 33, was a sex registrant with several prior convictions & had recently failed to register. He tried to rape another victim, but was interrupted. Sentenced to 60 yrs to life, he was denied parole yesterday, labeled as still a danger to the community.
