I finish Storm’s Edge: Life, Death & Magic in the Islands of Orkney by Peter Marshall. If I read a better history this year, I will be lucky. A rich, sweeping, moving & often drily funny survey both of Orkney itself, & of Orkney as a vantage point from which to survey much else.

Give u the female police officer who ran towards the gravest of danger, alone, confronted a rampaging knife man, eliminated the threat, & still managed to administer first aid right after.
If you're looking for a hero today, you need look no further.

Delighted to receive a copy of Peter Marshall’s latest volume this morning; it’s a 550-page magisterial cultural study of a subject very close to the author’s heart — the islands of Orkney. Having already read a draft copy of this superb work, I can
heartily recommend it.

I get the rationale; it’s become largely redundant to cite the (home) city of major publishing houses, but is this not a further privileging of these larger companies? What about the small (but significant) publishing houses which are very much located in a particular city?

I’m actually not so sure how I feel about this. I quite enjoyed learning the city names of publishers. Now that special knowledge will be redundant! 🥲

If free next Sat come along to this charity memorial walk in memory of my uncle Mick Sutton who passed away in Nov 2020. Mick organised many charity fundraising walks over the years. Funds raised are going towards schools in Malawi. Alternatively donate; gofundme.com/f/josie-phelan…

My father drove double-deck buses in Dublin for over thirty years. I just came across a number of safe driving certificates that he was awarded. This one is from 1949. Isn’t it lovely?
