Really important points from Cyrus Hall, Transit Equity in TL, SoMa, & all of SF.

The family killed at West Portal was on foot, waiting for the bus, and didn’t live in the neighborhood.

People who walk & ride transit should matter first, no matter where they live or if they own a business.

This is a classic failure of North American planning: the idea that a committee of Concerned Merchants and Residents with little to no expertise can sit down and come up with a real solution that isn’t just a rehashing of vibes and narratives of the way the feel things should be.

'One would think, now that such a predictable horror has actually happened, that the merchants who contributed to it would have the modicum of decency to shut the fuck up. Instead, they've created a web page and continue to protest any restriction to driving'

Over the last couple years, a group has taken it upon themselves to begin making what they call 'guerilla traffic improvements” to several San Francisco streets. nbcbay.com/RJCF5kf

Feels deeply unserious of a gov to say that mode shift away from cars and that safe streets are priority policies and remove a known solution to this in ~48 hours but what do I know

Paul, many people are saying you should check out S(ubstack)-Bahn to get a deeper, nuanced, international understanding about the perils of privatized mass transit. isn't that right folks

Traffic safety activists performed a little guerilla action on Tuesday morning, installing plastic signs along the Wiggle, San Francisco's premiere bike route, to tell cars to slow down & yield.

Will the changes remain? They sure hope so.

Wild that it takes so many pedestrian deaths, rounds of driver input + years for SFMTA to make simple changes we desperately need—but only 48 hrs to remove global-best-practice installations that boost safety, calm traffic + encourage active mobility

Grateful for activists

really mind blowing to me how easy it is for the city to remove safety measures versus how difficult it it’s to get the city to initiate any kind of safety measure

hats off to Safe Street Rebel for their work on making this city a safer place for all

this one was one of my favorite actions yet!! I live in the neighborhood and everybody was talking about how much they liked the install and how it improved the street. even as they were taking it out people were telling them not to

Yep, signs are coming out unfortunately. Lasted over 48 hours though, and thousands of people got to see how much better the street can be with such a simple change.

If you want the city to do stuff like this, send an email here: tinyurl.com/SSRwiggle

Hope you liked it!

Ty for the writeup Mission Local/Yujie Zhou! “The community has wanted this for a very long time... It’s kind of a proof of concept, it’s easy to install, and the city could do it if they wanted to.”

Grateful to Safe Street Rebel for making the Wiggle—SF's most famous bike path, which is fully open to cars—safer for people and bikes by installing median flex posts

Tactical urbanism work like this saves lives and promotes active mobility; the city should drive and fund it!
