#PopeLeoXIV to journalists: "Let me, therefore, reiterate today the church’s solidarity with journalists who are imprisoned for seeking and reporting the truth" and says "the precious gift of free speech and of the press" must be safeguarded. His words were met with applause.

I was lucky enough to be in the hall for this, and the whole room — full of journalists who knew and trusted and relied on Father Lombardi during his time as director of the Vatican press office — broke out in spontaneous and sustained applause.

As Sam points out, the question is not how Pope Leo fits into our categories, but whether we will allow him to change them — and in so doing change us.
