Jacqui Lambie's bill including a cap on VC pay is sent to a Senate committee, report date August 1. You can bet the inquiry will continue after the election if she is re-elected.

Standby for a deplorathon tomorrow, at the Senate committee hearing on uni governance. The Fair Work Ombudsman has 45 mins to explain why payroll must be fixed, ditto TEQSA on oversight and the NTEU has an hour to complain about everything.

In the worst timing since I last danced the WA uni annual reports are out, listing VC salaries - Curtin and UWA's are a million plus. Just about the only issue in the election will be why VC pay should be half that.

Times not so tough for Monash U management. VC reports $308m profit '24 (inc invest income and philanthropy) up from $33min 2023. Even ex committed funds still $48m surplus against $145 loss in '23.

Labor must really think it is in with a chance for Leichhardt - PM announces $27m for health and engneering wing at CQU Cairns. Won't all at James Cook be pleased - they used to have Cairns to themselves

ABS reports 197 000 international students arrived in Feb, 12 % up on 2/24 and 23 % on (pre Covid) 2/19. 166 000 were in HE. Gives the Libs something new to quote in their campaign to blame Go8 unis for everything

Uni Melbourne is selling the modest Parkville digs provided to former VC Duncan Maskell. "Cumnock" is on the market for $8m or so - a snip for first-home buyers with $10m in the family trust. Wherever do people get the idea that Uni Melbourne is elitist?

In the coalition election costings is a $556m saving from “Modify” Commonwealth prac payments (which surely means no/reduced support for nursing, midwifery, teaching and social work placements). if so Vote 1 for placement poverty

VCs making $500 000 plus (that is to say all of them) will be watching the Tas senate count. If Jacquie Lambie loses (she could) her bill to cap their pay might disappear with her. It's not the bill itself that would do them damage but evidence to a committee inquiry on it.

Julian Hill's appointment as assistant minister for international education should alarm industry lobbies. His performance on the joint parly committee inquiry into tourism and int educ demonstrated he knows, really knows, his stuff.

Jason Clare has education so under control the only related question to the PM at the new ministry presser was about internationals. Biggest risk Clare faces as continuing minister is boredom.

Brian Schmidt is on at the Press Club May 28, to talk about national research capability. Will he answer questions about the state of ANU and the campaign against his successor as VC, Genevieve Bell?
