Today I was sworn in as the 50th President pro Tempore of the California State Senate. Thank you all for your support and for putting your faith in me to lead this body in service to the people of California. We have work to do, so let’s get started.

Tonight, amongst family, community and friends, at my former junior high school, I was sworn in as the 50th Senate President pro Tempore by Madam Vice President Kamala Harris.

It is an honor to represent the state in this new role and I look forward to continuing to serve the community that shaped my leadership.

Today SD21 came together to honor the legacy of Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. Today I am grateful for his lasting legacy and the reminder to never stop striving for equality and justice for all.

Yet another person has died at the hands of ICE. These escalating tactics are causing fear, anger, and frustration from millions across this country. California stands in solidarity with Minneapolis and all Minnesotans.

Today we remember the millions of lives lost during the #Holocaust. May we honor their memory and recommit ourselves to eradicating hatred and violence.
