Silvana Paternostro Fuller notes: My Colombian War explores the contradictions of that conflict through the lens of her own gilded family circumstances and the background of grinding poverty and inequality and how that maps onto the unbridgeable chasm between guerrillas and paramilitaries.
Silvana Paternostro Hers is a disarmingly gentle but relentless interrogation of what she perceives as the wholesale failing of Colombian society to come to terms with its own reality, and the lengths to which it will go to perpetuate its denial.
Silvana Paternostro At the same time, she paints a charming, bitter-sweet picture of Colombia, at once so familiar to anyone who’s lived on the right side of the tracks in Latin America and yet so specific to Colombia. If you’ve met Colombians, you might have a sense of what that means.
Silvana Paternostro Only towards the end of the book does she develop the story of an idealistic US Marine whom she introduces at the start of her narrative, deploying to Colombia with a fantasy of revenging himself on the drug dealers that he blames for stealing his addict mother from him.
Silvana Paternostro He’s a useful avatar for the whole Plan Colombia, dredging dark places within himself as he descends into the arena of vigilantism, to the extent that he alienates himself both from the country he comes to love and from himself.
Silvana Paternostro The book itself is short on answers but its sympathetic, personal overview provides considerable insights into not only Colombia’s plight but the extent to which its problems increasingly mirror the world’s.
