Joy is when we arrive on an island, nostalgia when we leave. Sailing to an island has taught us to be alive. The words of a writer, the watery brushstrokes of an artist, a journey among the imaginary islands… ’cause we really don’t want to learn to live on dry land. SIRENE 17

Logbook: we have been facing rough seas for days but the trend is for the winds to calm and clouds to clear. Mostly sunny skies ahead as issue 18 approaches!

Nature and culture, stone and limewash, salt and wind. Thanks to a series of local initiatives, the Cyclades islands are rediscovering and reclaiming their native character. In the perennial struggle between archetypes and stereotypes, author Matteo Trevisani tells us.

On 28 April 1947, a balsa raft with six men and a parrot set sail from Callao in Peru. The goal was to reach Polynesia. Its skipper was the then 33-year-old Thor Heyerdahl. Our journalist, Massimo Morello, was lucky enough to have personally met him in 1983. The story on issue 8.

We were on board the Italian training ship Palinuro for a few days, across a calm summer Adriatic sea. What make a ship a sailing vessel are the rigging and the fittings, but what bring it all to life are the men and women who make it sail. Words A. Coretti ph. M. Zoppellaro #19

Whales communicate with each other, and maybe they want to communicate with us? We met with David Gruber, the scientist leading the most advanced project to understand sperm whale communication. Deciphering their clicks has never been closer. # Sirene 19
