The Local Government Finance Settlement is the start of recovery, not the end. We are ensuring greater financial stability through the first multi-year settlement in over a decade and rebuilding public services with over £5bn additional funding to start fixing the foundations.

Local government core spending fell sharply during the austerity years and has not yet recovered. While there has been some recovery in core spending power since the mid-2010s, this has been primarily driven by increasing Council Tax - which is highly regressive.

We want everybody to feel better off in the place where they live with streets cleaned, potholes filled, and neighbourhoods kept safe. That is what our agenda for local government is all about: transforming communities across our country.
