This past Saturday, members from our education team traveled to Freeport to be a part of Fort Velasco Day hosted by the Freeport Historical Museum. Outreach and helping fellow historians keep Texas history alive is an important part of our mission.

📅 Happening around the museum grounds in July... 1️⃣ July 3: "The Many Faces of Sam Houston", opens in the exhibit gallery at the Walker Education Center. 2️⃣ July 4: Holiday - Museum complex closed. 3️⃣ Saturday Spotlight programs continue through the month.

During this holiday weekend, come learn about the military drills used by Sam Houston to train the Texian army. Visitors of all ages are invited to participate in the drills and experience a slice of a soldier's life during the Texas Revolution.

We will be closed on the 4th to allow our staff time with their families. We hope everyone has a wonderful and safe holiday!

Our incredibly talented curator of exhibits Jude Routh will be retiring in mid-September. Unfortunately, we will not have someone in place to take on the contest this year. We are saddened, but the contest will be back in 2026 bigger than ever!

We will wrap up our Summer Saturday Spotlight programs by honoring Sam Houston on the anniversary of his death. The Steamboat House, the home he died in, will be open for the public to tour inside & take a glimpse into the last years of Houston’s life. bit.ly/3GN8M2U

"Texas, Texas, Margaret..." At 6:15pm on July 26, 1863, Sam Houston passed away. After the death of her husband, Margaret opened the family Bible and inscribed inside the words on the post image.
