Yesterday we honored Major Jason Ketterling’s retirement after 24 years with SD Highway Patrol. From Wall to Assistant Superintendent, his impact on safety, tech, and leadership was profound. A Governor’s proclamation capped off a remarkable career. Thank you, Major Ketterling!

Troopers have seen an increase in vehicles speeding over 100 miles per hour. Not only does this put their safety at risk, it puts everyone else on the roadway at risk. Please slow down, increase following distance, and buckle up. #keepSDsafe

It’s never a good idea to speed even when passing a vehicle. State law (SDCL 32-25-28) states that when passing a slower vehicle on a two-lane highway with a posted speed limit of 65 mph or high, you can exceed the speed limit by 10 mph.

Recruit Tomczak visited with a driver’s education class in Watertown. Recruit Tomczak talked about rules of the road, seatbelt use, and DUI investigation. Through education we hope to make South Dakota roadways safer for all traveling in the state. #keepSDsafe

Trooper Elliott, Trooper Whitaker and Trooper Gohl spoke with a group of driver’s education students today in Watertown. Education is a big part of our role as state troopers, and we appreciate the opportunity to talk to our area youth. #keepSDsafe

It’s a rainy morning in northeastern South Dakota. If you are traveling through this part of the state today turn your headlights on for increased visibility, avoid cruise control in heavier rain, make sure have good set of wiper blades and always buckle that seatbelt!#keepSDsafe

What are the periods during which lamps must be lighted while driving? 1. From sunset to sunrise. 2. Any other time when there is not sufficient light to render clearly discernible any person on the highway at a distance of 200 feet ahead. #keepsdsafe

Parts of Roberts County in the northeast part of the state are experiencing flooding and water over roadways. There is also dense fog in areas. This picture was taken on SD Hwy 15 near the Wilmot Exit. Slow down, turn on your headlights, buckle up, and drive safely!
