Moral Economy of the Peasant set my intellectual course as an undergrad, Seeing Like a State anchored my dissertation. For the last decade, Jim was one of the wisest and strongest supporters of my work. His forthcoming book about the Irrawadi River will be terrific. What a loss.

You know you're done with what you're writing when you look up an abstruse loose end and you're directed to your own prior publications about the topic.

Tim Walz was one of the first politicians to call for an immediate ceasefire & release of all hostages. And when asked about the Uncommitted Movement, did NOT condemn them or demonize them. Instead, he said "they're civically engaged & should be listened to." Now he'll be VP.āœŠšŸ½

Oof, this one hurts me. Goodbye (or perhaps in honor of Wordle, I should say adieu) to my 800+ day crossword streak, and no pausing from doomscrolling during this most anxious week to do the Spelling Bee. But, as they say, "break your streak, don't break the strike."

Hello friends! I am testing the water over at Bluesky. Who should I follow for world and Chinese history, space and place, climate and environment, and left and liberatory politics? I'm at @rmostern.bsky.social over there.

In #worldhistory next semester, I'll cover medieval (Byzantine to Mamluk) #Palestine. I'm looking at Masalha (Palestine), Cobb (Race for Paradise) and primary sources like Benjamin of Tudela, Ibn Jubayr and al-Maqdisi. Any other suggestions for good undergrad friendly resources?
