Adverse discipline techniques don't make young people behave better. As adults in school settings, we are 50% of every interaction with a young person, so our behaviour is also communication.The way we interact ,give instructions, & respond can reduce problematic behaviour.🧠🌱

Punishment & isolation doesn't teach the brain how to regulate. It doesn't address the why behind the behaviour & doesn't work to improve behavioural outcomes & emotional regulation. We need to stop treating the symptom & start addressing the root causes.🧠🌱

Trauma informed is not something you do. Far from it. It's something you have to move beyond to become trauma responsive. Understanding child development & how this disrupts brain development & the stress response .Implementing this knowledge into a plan & or approach. 🧠🌱

Impulse control isn't a behaviour problem, its brain development. An under developed cortex.Children do not learn self control through behaviour charts,punishment, isolation or shame. They learn it through co-regulation, connection & practice.🧠🌱

Trauma does not exist in a vacuum. To cure the child, you heal the parent. We need to reform the environments where our young people are raised. 🧠🌱

Behaviourst approaches such as punishment & control teach young people that they are only loved & accepted when they please us or impress us. They must earn our approval, which can be damaging long-term. We do not need to control their behaviour to make them good people.🧠🌱
