🧵 1/5: Excited to share our latest research on the role of interoception in anxiety, depression, and psychosis! We reviewed 34 papers to understand how body awareness impacts these mental health conditions. #Interoception #MentalHealth

🧵 2/5: We found that cardiac interoceptive accuracy (heartbeat perception) isn’t consistently impaired in anxiety or depression but may be poorer in psychosis. However, more evidence is needed. Other body systems & interoceptive levels need systematic review. #Research

🧵 3/5: Lived experience was central to our review. People with mental health challenges highlighted the importance of body-focused techniques like mindfulness, but also noted difficulties with consistent practice and the short-lived benefits. #LivedExperience #MentalWellbeing

🧵 4/5: Our findings emphasise the need for alternatives to medication. Psychological interventions focusing on interoception show promise for anxiety & depression, but standardised, comprehensive assessments across different body systems are needed. #PsychologicalInterventions
