Paper alert: Social dynamics exploited to reduce antibiotic resistance. Thank you to my brilliant coauthors and the team at Microbiology - making science fun! tinyurl.com/44auc9kj Microbiology Society Alper Mutlu Kendra Rumbaugh #pseudomonas #AntimicrobialResistance
Check out our newest preprint:
P. aeruginosa uses pilus-mediated motility to invade and disperse S. aureus biofilms, rendering Sa cells susceptible to Pa antimicrobials. Without invasion Pa restricts Sa expansion forming dense Sa colonies with altered physiology Andrea Sánchez Peña
The final piece of my PhD is out. I am grateful to Tobi and Rolf Kümmerli for seeing this through. We found that phenotypic heterogeneity is driven by spatial and genealogical components, and siderophore sharing influences fitness of cell lineages. Intercropping has the potential to improve plant nutrition and crop yield. Wang et al. intercrop peanut and maize and show that Pseudomonas secreted siderophore pyoverdine play an important role in plant iron nutrition.

For many years, we have worked on cooperative aspects of siderophore sharing. Here, we show that siderophores from environmental pseudomonads can have strong competitive and antibacterial effects against pathogens through the induction of iron starvation.
