Ally Fogg The point about 'how can it be a war on men if they're waging it on themselves?' irked me.
I suspect the reviewer wouldn't say that about any other community facing clear problems, where some of the problems present as conflict within people from the same societal group.

charlie higson I'm close to the issues involved & maybe hypersensitive, but I think the paragraph about the DV shelter is callous, ill-informed & offensive & her conclusion is entirely unfair. The programme was far cleverer & more interesting than the one she clearly wanted it to be.

CR Short Exactly. It *was* covering a huge amount of ground but it wasn't scattergun at all, she just missed the point - there was actually a really strong theme ran through all of it.

She's just furious that Dyer didn't spend 2 hours wagging fingers at men & saying how awful they are.

But what gets me is that *anyone* could watch a really moving, sensitively handled item about a refuge for male victims of domestic abuse & think 'I wonder how I can use this to have a pop at men?'

Mangan is repeating is an incredibly damaging & untrue myth that says most male victims of DV have been victims of other men. It's not remotely true & it acts to increase suspicion, cynicism & creates an active barrier to reporting for male victims of partner abuse.

But FWIW if Lucy Mangan had taken a minute to research it rather than just 'suspecting' - she'd have found out that the figures quoted (29/30%) are not for all domestic abuse, but specifically partner abuse, and that 98% of cases, where gender is known, have a female perpetrator.

Have to mention this bit before I let this lie.

No one in this bit talked about gender of abusers, because it was about the victims/ survivors. It was a really important bit of the show because it explained how traditional masculine values can leave men at risk & unsupported.

“I’m glad I did, I don’t mind going to jail”… she said while paramedics frantically try to save the life of the man she stabbed three times.

We need to STOP presenting all women as ‘victims’ and get some urgent support for men & boys too.

The new docu 'Danny Dyer: How To Be A Man' is well worth a look. High points were Dyer's reaction to the lecture by Martin James Seager, the contributions by Dr Becci Owens and Cllr Ben Bradley MP, and the sections on the mental health benefits of boxing.
