The legacy of John Lodge is immortalised in the remarkable run of seven albums The Moody Blues released between 1967 and 1972. Their work from that era secures the band’s rightful place among the finest in rock history.

The Monster Squad (1987, dir. Fred Dekker). Revisited this childhood favourite last night. It’s sharper, funnier and more heartfelt than I remembered. A perfect blend of 80s adventure and real horror, and you can clearly see its DNA all over Stranger Things.

It’s lazy to say that this is the best album by midlake since Van Occupanther. I personally think every album since has had something special. Antiphon is a very special album. This one continues to showcase their brilliance. Go buy a physical now. You won’t be disappointed.

One Flew Over the Cuckoo’s Nest (1975, dir. Miloš Forman) One of the greatest films of the 70s. An incredible ensemble where every actor shines, giving Jack Nicholson the perfect stage for a career best performance. Masterpiece.

Last night’s film was The Last Picture Show (1971) by Peter Bogdanovich, a raw, haunting portrait of a small town slipping into a new world. The older generation watches as the youth stumble from uncertainty and longing into whatever comes next. Cinematic perfection.

50 years old today. A record that completely blew me away the first time I heard it (the day after its release, as I was late out of work on the Friday so had to wait until the Saturday morning to purchase it in Woolworths, Yate near Bristol). £2.99 if I remember correctly.

Nothing I didn’t already know, but if you’re new to the latest revelations, and are prepared to overcome the stigma, you may find yourself asking some fascinating questions. Very enjoyable and well made film.

THE FISHER KING (Terry Gilliam, 1991) Gilliam’s most tender film. Wide, tilted frames box in brilliant performances and a redemption tale that feels surreal and painfully true. Self-loathing makes the world look uglier, but this film reminds us that grace can still break through.
