In the spring of 1958, Maurice Stokes suffered an injury due to a terrible fall and suffered a brain injury that damaged his motor-control center. Paralyzed, Stokes was supported for the rest of his life by Jack Twyman, who became his legal guardian and advocate.

Beyond basketball, Twyman was a Hall of Fame human. When an injury left Royals teammate Maurice Stokes paralyzed, Twyman, at age 23, became his legal guardian, providing support until Stokes' death. Today the NBA presents the Twyman-Stokes Teammate of the Year Award each season.
