The network of Doppler wind lidar by Wildfire Interdisciplinary Research Center SJSU FireWeatherLab with the ability to scan wind speed/direction within plumes by the minute should be a game changer for wildfire behavior monitoring, esp with more sites coming soon 5/23/2024

๐ŸŒŠ Cubic feet per second (CFS) is how much & how fast water flows. We measure the amount of water released from our dams using CFS. โ€‹

One CFS is about the size of a basketball! ๐Ÿ€๐Ÿ˜ฒ Imagine 4,000 CFS as that many basketballs bouncing down the stream!

We have science data!

On May 19, mission scientists resumed receiving data from two of the four science instruments aboard our 46-year-old spacecraft.

Next up: Recalibrating the two remaining instruments, which could take weeks. go.nasa.gov/3UUhI9v

Leigh Orf's computer simulation of the 2011 El Reno EF5 multiple vortex tornado bears a striking resemblance to drone footage of the Iowa tornado. See the high resolution version of Orf's work at youtu.be/fXPCpEkjejo?t=โ€ฆ

Very prelim analysis of DOW data show
>250 mph peak winds, possibly high as 290, at 44 m (144 ft) above ground in Greenfield, IA. Tornado very intense & also very small, so worst winds were in narrow swath. Raw data from DOW7 (L); Prelim DOW-measured center path. POD blue dot (R)

When you see tornado impacts in neighborhoods you may wonder why some homes are leveled while others are damaged yet standing - this video by Reed Timmer, PhD shows subvortices / suction vortices in motion 5/21/2024
