A Memorial Cup year tends to drive up trade prices, but also the number of 2006-born players who ended up in the NCAA means, for teams looking to add veteran pieces, the price has gone up a second time. In other words, teams bringing in scoring punch are going to pay for it

Another hard-working and miserable to play against guy, Gunnar came to camp knowing he’d have to be a physical force to crack the roster. So that’s what he was. He showed off a bit of sniper’s touch too for good measure. Great moment for this young man, and well earned.

Perry was a calming influence in net for the Wheat Kings, especially in the win over Swift Current in Virden. More stability between the pipes is never a bad thing and he promises just that.

Former Wheat King Rhett Ravndahl appears to have won his training camp battle in Kamloops to stay with the team for his 20-year-old season. Rhett was all class when he was here and I’m glad to see him get that one last year in the WHL.

For the first time in his life, Jaxon Jacobson will have teammates and opponents younger than him. That’s going to be a big change for the sophomore Brandon Wheat Kings forward, but one he’s excited for: qcountryfm.ca/2025/09/17/276…

In addition to 233 WHL games, Grayson Burzynski is also the only Wheat Kings blueliner to get a look (so far) at an NHL rookie camp. In other words, he’s the voice of experience and he’s ready to help lead a gigantic defense corps: qcountryfm.ca/2025/09/17/276…

Opening night is barely over 48 hours away. To tide you over, I have one more pre-season blog on the Wheat Kings for Q Country where I talk offensive depth, depth at being offensive, recent signings, and differing defense corps: qcountryfm.ca/2025/09/17/in-…

In 27 hours, the Brandon Wheat Kings will lead off a new WHL season, a season they’ve had big plans for going back years. Ahead of that season, I spoke with Wheat Kings head coach and GM Marty Murray, running through the forwards, defense, and goaltending: qcountryfm.ca/2025/09/18/277…

There was never any doubt. When I say “plays like a captain” the mental image that comes to mind is someone who plays exactly like Caleb Hadland, and he conducts himself like one off the ice as well. An easy choice, yet still an excellent one.

Year five in the WHL, year nine in junior hockey, and home opener still hits different. Another season of stories await and it’s my privilege to share them with you. Let’s go, Wheat Kings fans!

One of the pleasures of this job is calling a first WHL goal, and it’s part of why I love the early season so much. Tonight, there were two. Congratulations to Chase Surkan and Gunnar Gleasman on their first WHL tallies! There are more to come, but you’ll never forget your first.

4200 fans on opening night (an increase of 500 from last year’s home opener) was excellent to see. It looks like ACU Place will have one heck of a pulse this season!

Some local connections with #mnwild in Winnipegger Carson Lambos on D and Brandon Wheat Kings LW Carter Klippenstein playing up front in this exhibition game. Ample veteran experience on the blue line with former Jets D Zach Bogosian and Jack Johnson both suiting up in this one.

Two years ago, after a back injury, I got scared right off from heavy deadlifts and haven’t tested since. So to hit a clean, conventional 405 today felt just so freakin good!

Great news for the Wheat Kings this week: both Carter Klippenstein and Brady Turko are on their way back from NHL camps and will be with the team this week. For the first time all season, we’ll soon see the full forward corps for this group.

My latest on the Wheat Kings after a strange opening weekend features sitting with a loss, mouth guard minutiae, a long-awaited return, and roses among the thorns: qcountryfm.ca/2025/09/23/in-…

The boys are indeed back in town. Carter Klippenstein and Brady Turko are back at Wheat Kings practice with important lessons and incredible experiences from their first NHL camps under their belts: qcountryfm.ca/2025/09/23/tur…

The last of the NHL campers are back, and Wheat Kings practices have been fast and intense this week, both thanks to their presence and a looming divisional game. qcountryfm.ca/2025/09/24/278…
