New work by Claire Moon revises the origin story of #transitionaljustice. Locates its origins in the conflict between the Nuremberg lesson (crimes against humanity must be punished) and that of the end of the Cold War (violent authoritarians must be pacified not punished).

Important report on #Zacatecas, Mexico, where danger and violence silence the media and only rumour remains as a means of finding out what is happening. nexos.com.mx/?p=73327 Claudio Lomnitz Revista Nexos

This would destroy relations with Mexico and displace thousands of innocent people and it doesn't stand a chance of disrupting organized crime and drug trafficking in Mexico. This is a totally irrational idea that will have permanent and extremely bloody consquences.

I don't think many folk understand the scale of these ops, or their reach. This single haul alone is worth over 100 million US dollars. Take that in.

Most likely because extortion isn't a federal crime in Mexico, whereas kidnapping/'disappearance' is. Redescribing the crime, lowering its status, avoids illuminating federal complicity and lowers the disappearance stats (they're counted instead as 'extortion').

It is impossible to overstate how sincere the Republicans are about using military force in Mexico. With 100% certainty, Trump will direct his Secretary of State to designate cartels as FTOs and then use the 2001 AUMF to authorize raids and strikes, no vote in Congress necessary.

'Mexico president asks cartels not to fight each other after arrest of drug lords'. And while we're at it, how about getting the military off the street too? theguardian.com/world/article/…
