Mary, Queen of Scots was held captive at Carlisle Castle from May-July 1568 by order of her cousin Queen Elizabeth I. She was fleeing rebellion in Scotland and decided to take refuge in England. She was then moved and held prisoner until her eventual execution in 1587.

The Fortunes of Perkin Warbeck by Mary Shelley published 1830 is a historical novel based on Perkin Warbeck and his claim to be Richard of Shrewsbury, Duke of York, one of the Princes in the Tower. Shelley argues he survived into adulthood and led a rebellion against the Tudors.

Richard, Duke of Gloucester, established a chantry at Barnard Castle, funding priests to pray for those killed in the Wars of the Roses. In 2024 Barnard Castle celebrated 550 years since his lordship was granted, with Windows for the King, 7 etched windows in St Mary's Church.
