Mary, Queen of Scots was held captive at Carlisle Castle from May-July 1568 by order of her cousin Queen Elizabeth I. She was fleeing rebellion in Scotland and decided to take refuge in England. She was then moved and held prisoner until her eventual execution in 1587.

In 1484 Richard III personally funded and oversaw the addition of the topmost chamber to Monk Bar. This upper level was likely built to house weaponry or as a lookout point to strengthen York's defences.
