I recently wrote a piece ‘Little Lives Lost’ for Australian Geographic about my experiences of how coral bleaching impacts the reef’s smaller creatures. Human-induced climate change is warming the oceans and killing corals, and the species that rely on them, en masse. australiangeographic.com.au/topics/science…

🚨 UNSEEN UNTIL NOW 🚨 Scientists from University of Plymouth have discovered the deepest known evidence of coral reef bleaching. More than 90 metres below the Indian Ocean, at depths previously thought to be resilient to warming, 80% of the reefs in certain areas were damaged 👇🪸

We still have an ozone layer because we phased OUT (rather than phase DOWN) CFCs. We still hear birdsong in spring because we phased OUT (rather than phase DOWN) DDT. A livable climate requires that we phase OUT rather than phase DOWN fossil fuels.

Fact-check: Even the most remote, most pristine, and best managed coral reefs are reeling from anthropogenic climate change. “Building local resilience” doesn’t stop rising temperatures. Red indicates reefs with an average of 51% coral mortality in 2016. nature.com/articles/s4158…

THREE pan/tropical coral bleaching events, each affecting 50-70% of the world’s reefs, have already occurred in 1998, 2010 and 2015/2016. As anthropogenic heating continues, no-one should be surprised when the next one occurs.

Breaking: 2023 is officially the hottest year on record and it's a dire warning from our planet ⚠️ Our climate is changing now, not in a distant future. As we head into 2024, the events of last year should be a clarion call for action. #NatureCantWait – A thread. 🌍🔥

Think the new January UK temperature record of 19.6C (12C above average) was crazy? You should see forecast temperatures towards the arctic tomorrow...

To many people, this photo captures a pretty tropical reef, with colourful corals and fishes. But let’s take a closer look at the biology on display - a picture tells a 1000 words (thread 1/8)

I wonder who is paying for hundreds of bots to spread the myth that “marine debris” is a grave danger for the #GreatBarrierReef? It seems like an orchestrated attempt to ignore anthropogenic heating due to greenhouse gas emissions from fossil fuels and from land clearing.

Mass coral bleaching unfolding at Lizard Island, northern Great Barrier Reef (March 2024). These events have become “normalised” to the point where it’s easy to forget that 20 yrs ago this would have been an unprecedented and isolated event.

UK is now one of the most nature-depleted countries in the world. It is a national crisis - and neither the Tories nor Labour have a plan to address it. So tomorrow I'll be leading a debate in Parliament on UK biodiversity loss - please encourage your MP to take part.
