Molecular cloning: a ubiquitous and essential molecular biology technique. It's also the reason many scientists become superstitious, some equating cloning to witchcraft. But why, and does it have to be this way?

So proud of our PhD student Felicia taking home a travel award for her brilliant talk from #ECPM2024 and I'm super humbled to win the Biomolecular Horizons Award! What a great few days of protein science ☺️ #SuperstarsofSTEM Sydney Chemistry

It's been a busy week for the lab, talks at 3 different meetings!! Haritha Sudhakar doing amazing at Royal Australian Chemical Institute #MCCB symposium yesterday, and Dr Taylor Szyszka + Felicia doing us proud today at #ECPM2024 - well deserved recognition of the amazing science you each have been doing!

Today in Nature Biotechnology, we describe first-gen click editors (CEs), which couple the advantageous properties of DNA-dependent DNA polymerases and HUH endonucleases with RNA-programmable nickases for precise and versatile human genome editing. 🧬 nature.com/articles/s4158…

The new gene editing tool created by scientists at Arc Institute is a step well past CRISPR, & is essentially a ‘word processor’ for DNA. Based on jumping genes, the new system—being called both ‘bridge editing’ and ‘seekRNA’—is able to “cut, paste, and flip any DNA sequence” 2/

How much good science is not happening these days because of the way credit gets distributed, which discourages scientists from collaborating in a true partnership?

What I don't get about academia is the chronic lack of celebration. It is hard to get & maintain grant funding, hard to get papers accepted without Faustian bargains, hard to be a great mentor, & hard to maximize trainee success. All of it is hard. We should celebrate everything.

Boy: Do not try and bend the protein. That's impossible. Instead... only try to realize the truth. Neo: What truth? Boy: There is no protein structure. Neo: There is no protein structure? Boy: Then you'll see, that it is not the protein that bends, it is only yourself.

My favourite discovery ever has just come online. Can I please tell you about some seriously wacky molecular biology? The story starts with a reverse transcriptase that SOMEHOW defends bacteria from viruses. (👇 I recommend sound ON for the video 🎹) 1/
