Sec. Colin Powell rose from humble beginnings to astute statesman & brilliant strategist. He used overwhelming force to achieve defined military objectives. America is safer & more secure because of him. In 1994, I had privilege of hosting him at a private dinner in Charlotte.

With deep sadness, we offer our condolences for the tragic loss of Prime Minister Shinzo Abe to his family and the citizens of Japan whom he ably served. I first met him in 2013. He had a great vision for Japan and reminded me much of Ronald Reagan with his warmth and courage.

I hosted Mikhail Gorbachev in Charlotte for a foreign policy speech in 1994. While reviled by Putin for dismantling the Soviet empire, his glasnost and perestroika reforms liberated hundreds of millions of people from authoritarian rule, sadly again under siege by Putin.

We remember today a dear friend for 33 years, UK MP Sir David Amess, as a very kind and thoughtful person whose life was taken by a terrorist one year ago. David shared his love and support to all who knew him. May God bless and be close to his dear wife Julia and the family.
