John W.E. Thomas: Thomas was the first African American to be elected as a state representative to the Illinois House in 1876. A notable leader in the African-American community, Thomas successfully passed the state’s first civil rights legislation and election reform.

As our state’s first Black Speaker of the House, Emanuel “Chris” Welch is adding to Illinois’ Black history. In 2021, more than 140 years after John W.E. Thomas became the first African-American to serve in the Illinois House-diversity is our strength, unity is our super power.

This day traces its roots back to May 1, 1886, marking the commencement of the pivotal Haymarket Affair in Chicago. Today, we celebrate the progress made through the sacrifices of workers everywhere and continue to advocate for fair and just working conditions! #solidarity
