Day 2 (Part 5): Just after mile marker 79 we pulled over & headed due west into a lava field in search of a lone palm tree. 20 min later we were standing on a black “sand” beach staring at a very sad palm tree. Let’s just say it wouldn’t make the top of our list of places….

Day 2 (Part 6): Next, as we drove across the Big Island, we found a #fruitstand with #cocofrío & had to make a stop. Then on to #WaipioVally. You used to be able to go into the valley but recently they’ve closed the road for fear of collapse under the travel of so many visitors.

Day 3: Waterfalls, Local Eats & Lava Tubes… oh my! (Part 1): 1 of the most beautiful sunrises I've seen, from our hammocks!!! We took our time to get up and make ourselves some breakfast in the community kitchen & took a quick tour of the space since we had gotten in so late.

Day 3 - (Part 2): After packing up our things we hit the road but didn't make it far before we found some roadside falls tugged into a magical rainforest setting. We pulled over on the side of the road to explore the massive trees & roots of the swiss cheese plants draping down.

Day 3: (Part 4): ... but the water was rushing out of the huge cave so quickly there was no way anyone was taking a dip there so we went over to Onomea Bay instead and took the quick quarter-mile trail down to the water and watched the waves crash into the cliffs all around us.

Day 3 (Part 5): By this time we were hungry so we made our way into #Hilo and over to Cafe 100, a local spot with very affordable Hawaiian style comfort food. We had a #mocoloco (rice topped with a hamburger patty, gravy and a fried egg) & a fish loco (pictured).

Day 3 (Part 6): We realized it was #NationalBeerDay & decided we need to find a brewery, so after a quick stop at Walmart for dish sponges we made our way to #HiloBrewingCompany for a pint (or two). We met a couple locals there who shared some stories & suggestions for the area.
