The LA County jail system isn’t just the biggest in the country; it’s the biggest in the world, incarcerating upward of 14,600 people this month.

Such an important point. (And kudos to the whole CheckTheSheriffLA Coalition for keeping the heat up on this issue.) Villanueva is not an outlier. We've had a string of bad sheriffs. He's just the most abrasive and the one mostly likely to say the quiet part out loud.

Last year, about 40% of the LA County jail’s total population had a diagnosed mental illness, compared with about 27% back in 2012. This is what happens when we have failed to invest enough money in mental health care and community alternatives to incarceration.
