The Microbiology Society annual conference has been and gone, and this year was particularly exciting!

It was a pleasure to chair and speak in this years career session: career paths outside of academia.

My journey seems to be a “right place at the right time” situation, however, behind that is nurturing relationships and collaborations which in my experience generates the opportunities! Adding the ECR perspective was a privilege, I hope that my peers found these insights useful.

Having 2 years experience at TopMD Precision Medicine has been one of the best experiences of my career so far. I didn’t necessarily want to give life in a start-up/industrial company a go, as I enjoy research so much. But I took a chance and have no regrets!

I’ve been involved in amazing research at TopMD Precision Medicine and have learnt about innovation and biotech. Although I made the decision to return to academia, this is an experience I will carry with me. I hope to stay involved as much as my capacity allows. Best of both worlds!!

I also got to share 2 research posters from my work at TopMD Precision Medicine! Including work we have done as part of the DRAGON IMI COVID-19 Project and work lead by my colleague Erika Parkinson exploring molecular phenotypes and the microbiome in neurodegenerative diseases such as Alzheimer’s.

It was great to share this research with the community and I had some great conversations about precision medicine and molecular phenotyping. Hoping to share these as preprints/papers in the near future… so watch this space!
