Loving an anime that's kinda bad is one of the purest things in the universe.

I'd still give Naruto more credit but SAO was one of the first mainstream anime that was watched predominantly online. It shared its overseas success with increased internet accessibility, smartphones, and most of all, the rise of streaming.

The Saya plushie performing that well really says a lot about VNs, anime culture, and the disconnect between contemporary games media (triple A focus even on anime sites) vs the core demographic’s interests (no one is doing SEO on Saya no Uta for a reason)

Even at its peak, diehard MHA fans would typically cite AoT or Naruto or Sailor Moon as what got them into anime. It did bring new folks in & many millennials back, though!

Also, a fun note: MHA didn't *really* take off in North America until s2...when Crunchyroll got it 😉
