“Web3” is an entrenchment of the client-server model, locking users in to a centralized design while masquerading as decentralized system. We need a replacement for the World Wide Web (WWW), not a browser extension which deludes users into trusting a third party.

Very good thread for all serious IBC devs to read. Good question by Larry Engineer 🍡 and great answers. TL;DR app callbacks are needed for much IBC functionality but are not present unless you use custom contracts and channels.
