Here is a more readable version of my personal experience regarding Raquel Saraswati. What they accused her of is wrong, and people should know this. The recent press release shows that she has proof.

The 'outside agitator' is classic agitprop + projection. King demystified it for us in his 'Letter from Birmingham Jail.'

Why was NOTHING DONE about the abuse?

Were OTHERS abused too?

What other instances of UNREPORTED abuse happened?

I don’t expect most organizations to hold itself accountable for the harm it caused its employees. It would be nice if they did.

I have been labeling what I went through as a department chair abuse for years. I realize how rare it is for anyone in my organization to use that word out loud.

I wonder if saying I was abused pushes people to question who INITIATED the abuse.

Who ALLOWED the abuse?

When you actually call something abuse, people must uncover the source of the abuse and the details behind the abuse.

If you never name it, you don’t have to address it.

Today marks 10 years since the passing of Egyptian political writer Bassem Sabry. Bassem’s voice as a journalist, blogger, and activist who powerfully advocated for inclusive, progressive values during Egypt's 2011 revolution is sorely missed, particularly now more than ever.

This is how you know who is valued in your org.

Whose stories are believed?
Whose complaints are responded to? Who is paid the highest salaries?
Who is given multiple chances?
Whose bad behaviors are not addressed?
Who benefits from organizational policies?

People in administrative positions know how to report issues but know the consequences of doing so.

When your environment is so toxic and retaliatory even the policies in place won’t stop the dysfunction embedded in the foundation of an org.

I was arrested and brutalized along with dozens of other people in Atlanta and hundreds, maybe thousands, around the country this week.

The 23 of us who were kept in lockup at Dekalb County Jail overnight experienced further degradation in inhumane conditions 1/

Fucking hell. A (mainstream, popular) photography company offered parents the chance to buy a school photo that didn’t include the disabled children. It really is a reminder just how much some of the public believe disabled people should be wiped from society.

One of the quickest ways to heal is learning to love the parts of you that your abusers criticized. After abuse, we disconnect from the parts of ourselves carrying those memories, carrying that pain. When we welcome them back to us we find the inner peace we were longing for.
