A favorite 150-year-old coast redwood at UC Botanical Garden at Berkeley was lost in a big storm last year. They milled the lumber on-site and used the material to build steps and benches throughout the grounds. It is a beautiful tribute.

Slimer, is that you? I spent the weekend getting photobombed by glow-in-the-dark plant lice.
Too small to see with the unaided eye, it was fun to watch them zoom around under the macro lens. The focus stacking was like a mini stop-motion film.

Spotted two male Pin-tailed Whydahs perched on a fence at Sunol Regional Wilderness yesterday. Absolute stunners!
I've read that they are an African native, but there's a small wild population in SoCal. I don't see anything about them here in the Bay Area.
