Adding some context on the recent fire activity in BC. More area has burned in BC during 2017- 2023 & years) than in the 1959-2016 period (58 years). Wow, wonder what the future holds?

We predicted large emissions from the Canadian fires but itā€™s still shocking to see the numbers. This includes immediate emissions from fuel combustion but does not include longer term effects such as fire-induced permafrost thaw.

Digging into statistics a little, the global sea surface temperature anomaly on June 10 is 4.47 standard deviations above the mean. What does that mean in English? There's a 1-in-256,000 chance of observing what we're observing. This is beyond extraordinary.
