The Poplar Hawk moth. With scalloped, leaf-like wings with areas of grey and brown, small, pale eyespots. These moths do not feed during their short lives as adults. Instead they rely on fat reserves put down as caterpillars. Paul Turner (RSPB-images)

The water stick insect looks just like a mantis and has been found in our pond over the summer. An underwater predator, it uses its front legs to catch its prey. Its tail acts as a kind of 'snorkel', so it can breathe in the water. Photo credit- rspb-images

Thanks to Colin Green for sharing this great photo of a juvenile Cuckoo taken on the reserve earlier this week. Spotted on the river bank so perhaps this one was raised by Reed Warblers.

Much more water on the North Brooks and a range of wading birds - just in time for the first of our autumn migration birding workshops! We've a couple of spaces on next weekend's workshop: events.rspb.org.uk/events/122585 Here's our full sightings board for Saturday 30 August

It's #spiderseason! Thanks to volunteer Graham Osborne for these stunning photos, taken at the weekend. They feature the Fencepost Jumping Spider (Marpissa muscosa) which is a nationally scarce species and the Nursery Web Spider.

This month our reserve provides a much needed resting stop for our migrating birds- think of us a high class service station! We are starting to see visitors such as Redstarts gracing us with their presence. Look for them feeding among the branches of their woodland home.

The bushes, hedgerows and fence lines around the nature trail were busy with warblers, Redstart and Spotted Flycatchers - here's the sightings board from Tuesday 9 Sept. A sunny day and plenty of insects around too. The lovely photos come from volunteer Graham Osborne.

Sadly Yellow Wagtails are on the Red List of birds of conservation concern due to their declining number and are extinct as a breeding bird in Ireland. They can be spotted at Pulborough Brooks fuelling up before their long migration back to Africa. Photo-Ben Andrews RSPB Images

Lots of sunshine was enjoyed with a few epic rain showers today. However this did not stop the wildlife coming out to explore! Plenty to be seen on the reserve over the last few days- the highlight from today has to be the large flock of Goldfinch seen feeding.
