This week is the ~36th month since COVID-19 declared pandemic & 12th month of Russia’s invasion of Ukraine. The loss of life has been significant and can neither be overstated nor underestimated. More than ever before, these events have highlighted our interconnectivity (2/5)

In the context of nutrition, these impacts have resulted in increased food costs: combination of energy required for N fixation and transportation of N & P from regions of localized supply; all while N & P consumption per capita has grown since 1961 (3/5)

We discuss this history and the energy required for N&P delivery as fertilizers. Further, we show the difficulty in achieving sustainability and meeting nutrient demand solely by synthesis; illustrating recovery as a much-needed contributor for sustainability and supply (4/5)
