Before Nkumbula and KK became popular figures, the first person to mobilize and unite Africans of all ethnic groups in Zambia against colonialism was a charismatic Lozi fellow named Godwin Mbikusita Lewanika. He led the Northern Rhodesia Congress- our first political party.

46 of Zambia’s 72 ethnic groups are Lozi tribes. Lozi consists of several ethnic groups such as the Kwanda, Makoma, Mbowe, Mishulundu, Mwenyi, Mwanga, Ndundulu, Nygengo, Shanjo, Simaa and others which live in the Barotse flood plains. Their common language is siLozi.

Lewanika (yes, THAT guy) had a real name- Lubosi.

The Lozi King given the name LEWANIKA by another Zambian tribe, the Mbunda people. Lewanika means “The Unifier” in Mbunda.

Historically, other tribes didn’t see Lozis as a divisive people.
