And blindly marrying myself to “policy” on files that inevitably result in criminal records or have mandatory minimums to justify not taking a reasonable offer to resolve wouldn’t make me feel any better either.

The sheer number of people in this country who give up legitimate defences because of the cost of defending themselves and all or nothing positions taken by Crown would shock you.

People sometimes ask me if I could ever be a prosecutor.

I could never live with myself knowing that taking a position on a file would result in a guilty plea just because a person cannot afford a lawyer or a trial and doesn’t qualify for legal aid.
