Dilley and Karnes have for six years harmed families & failed to provide appropriate safeguards for children. We are grateful for the relentless work of Proyecto Dilley and RAICES who have protected families & will continue to hold ICE accountable. expressnews.com/news/local/art…

Berks is now empty. But the vision of a fair and humane immigration system requires the permanent closure of Dilley, Karnes and Berks and to #endfamilydetention. Read our official statement

The detention of a child or family (or anyone really) in secure detention for any period of time is never an acceptable alternative. The detention of children - for even short periods of time - is catastrophic - and never in their best interests.

The South Texas Family Residential Center (Dilley) and the Karnes County Family Residential Center in TX share a history of negligence & abuse, including physical and sexual abuse and inadequate medical and mental health care. This is a pattern seen throughout ICE detention. 2/4

Family detention, like all imm detention, is on the wrong side of history. Last week it was reported that ICE will rebrand the Dilley Family Detention Center in TX as a “reception center.” Let's be clear: it’s detention if people are in ICE custody. Biden must #ShutDownDilley!

A law professor at St. Mary’s University in San Antonio, called the new 72-hour policy a “positive” sign, but cautioned that any detentions of children raised concerns because of research showing that children in such conditions suffered long-term damage. nytimes.com/2021/03/04/us/…

“The changes at the Karnes and Dilley family prisons are, at best, reversible operational changes that reduce the harm of long-term detention, and at worst, a temporary move to quell concern about this controversial immigration policy,” said @meza_andrea_ RAICES

the administration doesn't get to evade responsibility for huge numbers of unaccompanied kids stuck too long in CBP - they could significantly ameliorate this now if they stopped #Title42 and allowed families to pursue asylum cases 1. together; 2. in freedom; 3. on U.S. soil

Why #FirstTen to #CommunitiesNotCages is calling to #ShutDownDilley: The Dilley Family Detention Center in TX has a record rife with abuse, including reports of foul water & medical neglect. Children are consistently released w/ health issues dubbed by hospitals,“Dilley-ish.”
