Today's random cultural reference in the Physics of the Solar System lecture was inspired by our discussion of radioactive dating and an example from human remains at Stonehenge, which then led to a discussion of Julian Cope, a rock star in several ways themodernantiquarian.com/home/

In the garden earlier, I watched a wren collecting materials for a nest it's building inside ivy covering a stump. Nearby, two blue tits were heading to and from their nest in a container we put in a hawthorn hedge. No loud twittering yet when they arrived but can't be too long.

I couldnt be less surprised by how much time, energy and frothing at the mouth is being expended on calls for VAR rule changes when it's United who benefitted from a very close call.

We need a just transition away from fossil fuels to help us hit Net Zero . You don't make that happen with 100 new oil and gas licenses , a new coal mine , or by tearing up plans to tackle vehicle emissions & phase out gas boilers – that's why I'm taking the Government to court .

Today's random cultural digression in the Physics of the Solar System lecture was the Chicxulub crater (dinosaur killer) magnetic anomaly map revealing buried structure triggering discussion of Alien vs Predator which also has a buried structure.

I used to have to attend meetings in basement rooms in New York to hear conspiracy theories as nutty as this. But on GB News they're just nodded through.

Very sad news. Worked with Ian on many projects in teaching and outreach. He was a great enthusiast for astronomy and a particularly strong supporter of the public astronomy community.
