ProACTIVE is a research study that aims to understand how alcohol treatment is currently delivered in England, and who may benefit from it. Working with people who have experience of alcohol treatment is key to the project. The study is made up of 4 different work packages.

The first work package will create a database of alcohol treatments across England through contacting NHS trusts to understand what hospitals have alcohol treatments and which type. Then we will speak to alcohol care team experts to reach an agreement about the key components.

The second work package will compare optimal alcohol care teams to no-alcohol treatment. 3 hospitals with optimal treatments and 3 without treatments will be recruited. Then we will compare participants alcohol consumption and health in hospitals with treatment vs. without.

The third work package will use 4 case studies to understand the experience of decision makers, staff, and patients. This will be used to understand how factors within the alcohol care teams have shaped how they are delivered and their impact.

The fourth work package will share the findings of the three previous work packages to inform policy makers and clinicians about how to improve current alcohol care teams. The research will also show the value of including members of the wider public in research in alcohol care.

We are happy to say that our National Survey will shortly be launched! We are contacting NHS hospitals across England and asking them to complete an online survey about their alcohol treatment provisions. #alcoholcareteams

Recruitment to our national survey about hospital-based alcohol provision is going well, with 50 hospitals completing their survey so far. If you work in hospital-based alcohol provision and have not yet been involved, please message us here or via [email protected]
