Predictably bleak annual report from HMI Prisons. It says that education was "poor overall and had continued to decline", adding "it is now eight years since Dame Sally Coates completed her review into prison education and it is depressing how little has changed".

The HMI Prisons Annual Report highlights yet again the awful mess that our prisons are in. If the government wants to find long-term solutions to the capacity crisis, they need to act now to get prison education back on track. Read the report here: ow.ly/YjIO50TjQu1

Education is vital in supporting rehabilitation. With the Early Release Scheme coming into affect today, it’s important people are being offered the opportunity to learn skills to support their progress in the community

It's truly amazing what people can achieve when they set their minds to studying while in prison. However, these achievements are only possible with support from the tenacious, dedicated staff who work in our prisons – thank you #HiddenHeroes

It's good to see that ministers are considering earned early release from prison for participating in education. But there is no point incentivising people to participate in activities that are not available. The priority must be investment. thetimes.com/uk/politics/ar…

This is such a good article by a The Longford Trust scholar, Daniel, on his experiences of studying for a degree in prison. I particularly liked his description of doing a degree without internet access as feeling like “running a marathon in the dark”. longfordtrust.org/the-barriers-a…

Plans to link prison education to early release are worth considering. But at present it's underfunded, limited, and there aren’t enough teachers or classrooms. The first priority must be to make high quality education more widely available to learners. feweek.co.uk/prisons-lack-r…
