In Mauryan era, the agricultural farms were attended by the following: 1) Vrishti - Landless labours, who worked on the basis of free food & cash; 2) Karmkara: Who worked for wages only. There were lastly farmers proper, whom the State charged a sixth of the produce as tax.

In Mauryan age, the State maintained cattle-farms, stud farms & dairy farms & employed the necessary staff comprising of: 1) Gopalaka (cowherd), 2) Pindaraka (for buffaloes), 3) Dohaka (milker), 4) Manthaka (churner), together with hunters, to keep pasture grounds clear.
