Do you need a field guide on Escherichia coli phages or an assorted collection of them as a tool for genetic or evolutionary studies? Here we present the final version of our “BASEL collection” in PLOS Biology 👇😁. Short thread 1/6 journals.plos.org/plosbiology/ar…

It is with great excitement (and some pride) that I reveal what has been the main subject of my PhD for the past 3 years! Spoiler alert: it is about phages and antibiotic tolerant bacteria! Wanna know more? Continue reading (a🧵) (1/9) biorxiv.org/content/10.110…

A great review on how “bacteria use c-di-GMP networks to make sense of themselves and the world”🧫 (found the latter section title inspiring) #microbiology

Putin just put Kafka & Orwell to shame: no limits to dictator's imagination, no lows too low, no lies too blatant, no red lines too red to cross. What we witnessed tonight might seem surreal for democratic world. But the way we respond will define us for the generations to come.

The moment has finally come... My first (Co) first author paper is out today in The ISME Journal 🥳 and highlighted by Cambridge University news 😱🤩 We studied how polymicrobial interactions affect drug effectiveness and a new colistin resistance mechanism 🤯 👇 doi.org/10.1038/s41396…

Dear Twitter, I am a puzzled microbiologist seeking insights 🤔🤓. How stable Fe2+ is in defined media (eg, supplemented with FeCl2/FeSO4)? Chemists told me Fe2+ would oxidise to Fe3+ fairly quickly. One microbiologist told me Fe2+ is stable, others were less optimistic. Thanks!

Classic phage M13 is just a miracle of life - a complete virus with a genome smaller than some dumb plasmids used for cloning (6.4kb). ❤️🍝🧬

Such a flattering and exciting thread, especially considering the fact that today I gave the seminar of my one year progress on the project 🤗✨

#PhageOfTheWeek is back with T7, a killer virus that overpowers E. coli by frontal attack and massive replication 🫡🔥. Note the very large, fast-growing plaques of this phage that I imaged already after 8h before things get very messy. A 🧵 1/14

Yesterday scientist-artist Fabienne Estermann @fabi_est_ did some bacterial agar art with our high schoolers at Biozentrum, University of Basel University of Basel! 👩🏼‍🎨🎨🦠🧫 I admire their creativity and precision - they would make good scientists if they want 😁.

Happy to share our new piece of work: a robust, sensitive ratiometric c-di-GMP biosensor, cdGreen2. cdGreen2 allows monitoring of c-di-GMP dynamics over generations in various organisms. (1/2) biorxiv.org/content/10.110…
