This is hugely concerning. The fact that universities are effectively asking their staff to contradict the one. tiny. shred. of government advice, and in way that jeopardises those already most vulnerable in the community, makes a mockery of their duty of care.

Pathetic. Assistance for mortgage holders will be welcome but *still* no action on rents, bills and debt, and - critically - no extra cash for those unable to work. Even the US is hinting at basic income payments now - why can’t this gov’t do more? #UKGoverment #Cororonavirus

THREAD: 1/ Sunak's attempt to boost demand and stop business failures relies on £350bn of soft loans to business. It's big - once you realise they will never be repaid... it will take debt above £2 trillion... but...

After this pitiful relief package, which only seems designed to protect business and home owners, this seems inevitable and necessary. Up the renters ✊✊✊

*Disclaimer: not an economist* but doesn’t offering businesses loans, albeit on good terms rather than offering the public gov’t funded *proper* statutory sick pay (not paltry £188) & UBI & seem like the definition of disaster capitalism?!Ensuring future capitalisation thru debt

My sister is a junior doctor & took the victoria line to work this am. People squashed in nose to nose, she said Coronavirus is spreading fastest in London esp on public transport. We need gov’t controls on movement NOW to ensure safe travel for health workers & slow the spread

Tell me Bernie Sanders pretending to be a scary monster to his grandson is not the cutest thing you ever did see (during a quarantine)

The UK government need to do this immediately 👇👇 The Irish Government have stopped any data sharing between healthcare services and government departments. That means undocumented migrants can get the vital support they need without fear of detention or deportation #Covid_19

COVID-19 in Gaza "will be a massive disaster, resulting entirely from...more than a decade of Israeli blockade: a failing healthcare system, extreme poverty, dependence on humanitarian aid, dysfunctional infrastructure and harsh living conditions." trib.al/1noisCn

As Terry Eagleton says 'If you can look on this dreadful Medusa's head without turning to stone, then there may be a faint chance of resurrection.' Which basically means if you don't want to become a crank, don't be bitter - be clever. And one day we'll win.

Today is a defeat for the Left. But the real victory for our opponents would be watching the forces we have amassed in recent years scatter to the wind. Stay in Labour, organise and rebuild.

"The right of the labour movement, to be honest, has no ideas of any compelling quality, except the instinct for short-term political survival. (...) The only ‘struggle’ it engages in with any trace of conviction is the one against the left." Stuart Hall, right as ever.
