I would like to read a genealogy of Korean weightlifting that connects Kim Chun-hui, the matronly genius behind the current Korean team, to Seo Sang-cheon, author of this book (that's his picture), tarred as a Japanese sympathizer, who introduced the sport in the '30s.

The author, pictured in 1933, describes impressive measurements, attributing them to exercises performed day and night with the horizontal bar. He was a returnee from the Japanese capital, inspired by Eugen Sandow and the ideas of modern physical culture imported from the West.

From the National Museum of Taiwan History: twenty-five kilograms plates that read something like, OPPOSE COMMUNISM / RESIST THE SOVIETS, and BUILD THE BODY / SERVE THE NATION. Imperial physical culture was gone; there were new enemies to resist.
