One of my favourite things is to watch these discussions of 'Pillars' articles. So much great discussion about the state of a field at the time of the discovery, interesting background re the discovery itself that is never found in a paper. Long may they continue.

Itai Yanai I often remember how Eric Betzig dedicated his Nobel Lecture. Can your podcast interview a few of these exemplars of risk taking? Honestly, all the advice from those who made it no longer speaks to me.

Ignorant question: Would Zinkernagel & Doherty's classic findings show up using human cells, or would alloreactivity mask the requirement for TCR/MHC matching (i.e. did it depend on the level of mismatch seen in different mouse strains; assuming 1970s knowledge re these things)?

In case you missed it, NIAID is restoring non-competing awards to 100%, after the cut due to continuing resolution/budget uncertainty. R01 still an interim payline, at 9th %ile.

NIDDK has also finalized their approach for non-competing awards, funding at 96% (also up from 90%).

I know this post is just for fun, but one of the many hills I'm willing to die on is that unless your expertise will be used in a given place, there is no reason to ever use a degree title.

Check out my colleague J. Michael Stolley cool new paper showing how prior viral infection impacts future response to viral infection. Highlights again the limitations of SPF mice, but also suggests a possible way to improve their utility (controlled viral infection before use).
