After the Soviet Union collapsed in the 90s, missions to Venus collapsed too. Looking at the Wikipedia list is almost entirely Hammer & Sickle flags. What made the Soviets so interested in Venus?

With AI so accessible and social media so monetized, no one can possibly trust any UAP “sightings” like this ever again. Incentive to lie for views is too great and with the pace of GenAI soon no one will know what’s real anymore. The entire video information supply is salted.

Today is #NationalAviationDay – first established in 1939 by President Franklin D Roosevelt to acknowledge the birthday of Orville Wright. Today is a great day to recognize the importance of aviation to all humankind.

This twice-in-century event was lucky enough to be photographed from the ISS by my father Don Pettit. He was inspired by Captain James Cook’s documentation of the event on his own frontier expedition to Tahiti in 1769. Imagine where the next could be sighted from in 2117?

Uranus has dozens of formally named moons already. I propose the name for this one should be turned over to the public. It will get people talking and interested in planetary science during this uneasy time for the field. With the acceptable risk of another Boaty McBoatface.
